The Wanda Alston is currently looking for a Case Manager.  The Case Manager provides youth-centered, trauma informed case management services for eight to twelve LGBTQ young adults ages 18-24, who live in Wanda Alston Foundation transitional living program. The Case Manger uses clinical skills to develop and track individual service plans/treatment plans for each resident addressing client needs i.e. connection to medical and mental health services, accessing public benefits/resources, budgeting, permanent and stable housing, etc. The Case Manager works with house staff to implement tasks, directives, and intervention to assist residents in meeting their treatment plan goals.

The DC Center Board of Directors invites you to get more involved in our work by joining one of these board committees.  You do not need to be a Board Member to serve on a Board Committee. These committees are an excellent opportunity to learn more about the DC Center and find out if the board might be a good fit for you. Here are the committees currently seeking volunteers.

Fund Development Committee – The fund development committee supports the fiscal viability and sustainability of the DC Center. The committee focuses on our signature annual fundraising events, our Center Associates (monthly supporters of the DC Center), Professional Partners (our business partners), and individual donations. If you are interested in serving on this committee please reach out to Luke Scuitto at luke@thedccenter.org

Finance Committee – The finance committee assures the financial stability of the DC Center by advising the board on budget, investments, financial protocols, and financial statements. If you are interested in serving on the Finance Committee please reach out to Tiera Craig at tiera@thedccenter.org

Communications Committee – The communications committee assists with press releases, social media strategy, and outreach efforts. If you are interested in being part of the communications committee contact Rebecca Bauer at rebecca@thedccenter.org.

Board Development Committee – The Board Development Committee supports the Board in recruitment, retention, recognition, and succession of Directors, including the preparation of nominations for Director and Officer positions and guiding the training and strategic planning processes of the board. Youth Working Group Mini-Grants

Youth Mini Grants

The Youth Working Group at the DC Center for the LGBT Community is proud to announce it has awarded $750 in grants to three LGBTQ youth groups. The recipients are the Anacostia Senior High School Gay Straight Alliance, the Paint Branch High School Gender & Sexuality Alliance, and The Future Foundation’s Six Color Support Circle.

The students at Paint Branch High School appreciate that the mini grant will enable them to plan a new event, Let’s Go Be Together! (LGBT!). Their vision for the event is a fair, designed by and for LGBTQIA+ teens, where they can celebrate diversity, and encourage companionship among middle and high school GSAs in Montgomery County.

The students at Anacostia Senior High School look forward to using the funds to create posters, flyers and badges with their new logo, to purchase snacks for their meetings, and to cover miscellaneous field trip expenses so they can attend a SMYAL or youth pride event.

The Six Color Support Circle, a group led by The Future Foundation for LGBTQI youth ages 13-21, has presented a variety of successful events, from co-hosting Youth Pride to their recent Ugly Sweater Winter Social. They are excited to use the grant to create flyers so they can enhance their outreach and serve even more youth in 2019.

Sexual and gender minority Veterans have faced stigma and discrimination, which can affect health. As a healthcare institution, we need to work to make sure that Veterans with LGBT and related identities know that they are welcome at VA.

Available Health Care Services

There is an LGBT VCC at every facility to help you get the care you need. Contact the LGBT VCC at your nearest facility.

VA health care includes, among other services:

  • Hormone treatment
  • Substance use/alcohol treatment
  • Tobacco use treatment
  • Treatment and prevention of sexually transmitted infections/PrEP
  • Intimate partner violence reduction and treatment of after effects
  • Heart health
  • Cancer screening, prevention and treatment

As a result of stigma, stress, and discrimination, Veterans with LGBT and related identities face increased health risks and unique challenges in health care. We want you to be comfortable talking with your VA providers about all aspects of your life, so we can offer you the best care possible.

Summer Employment Opportunity for DC Youth

The DC Center is wants to hear from youth in the District of Columbia who are interested in working with us through the Marion Barry Summer Youth Employment Program.

The Summer Youth Employment Program is a locally funded initiative sponsored by the Department of Employment Services that provides District youth ages 14 to 21 with enriching and constructive summer work experiences through subsidized placements in the private and government sectors such as The DC Center.  This year the program will begin on Monday, June 24, 2019 and will end on Friday, August 2, 2019.   This is a great way to gain useful work experience and get paid.

Oversight Hearing for the Office of Aging

Support for LGBTQ Active Duty & First Responders

Girl Scout Troop Interest Assessment

Are you interested in seeing a Girl Scout troop start at the DC Center?   Maureen Doyle, a former employee of Girl Scouts here in the District of Columbia, is interested in hearing from you.   This troop would be open to everyone, but focused on supporting lesbian, bi, and trans identified young women.

If you are interested please contact maureendoyle70@gmail.com to get started.  If there is sufficient interest, we will schedule an interest night here at the DC Center where you can learn more.  We would need a commitment from six or more families to get started.
