Gallaudet University, the world’s only liberal arts college focused on serving the Deaf and Signing community, is hosting the tenth annual ColorFEST Conference. This is a conference that is centered on the lives and experiences of Deaf and Hard-of-Hearing youth and young adults who identify as Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, or Queer/Questioning (LGBTQ+) or as allies. It will be held on April 14-16, 2017, at Gallaudet University in Washington, D.C. There will be a full day of workshops on Saturday, April 15th.

This year’s theme, “Color OUTside the Lines,” was selected to acknowledge and lift up the voices of those who may feel out of place because their experiences do not fit within pre-defined labels or expectations. Also, they are focusing on sharing information that may not be easily found in the regular classroom environment, with a particular focus on the needs and interests of LGBTQ+ people of color. Information is empowerment. Attendees at the ColorFEST 2017 Conference will be welcomed, affirmed, and celebrated for their full selves, including their multiple intersectional identities.

Additionally, they will have people who are movers and shakers in the LGBTQA education and advocacy community coming for a variety of reasons. They have alumni members of Gallaudet who are invested, parents of students, and outside organizations with which they have partnered up, such as Communication Services for the Deaf, DAWN, Whitman-Walker Clinic, Rainbow Alliance of the Deaf, National Association of the Deaf, Queers of Color, the Metropolitan Police Department, League of United Latin American Citizens (LULAC) Lambda, and others that will be a part of this Expo. They are excited to present speakers who are connected to and represent many intersecting identities, including Deaf+, transgender, people of color, Latinx, activist, student, parents, and so on.
