OutWrite Presents “Warrior Poets: Speaking as Resistance”

Readings from Taylor Johnson, Danielle Reed & PeaceJah. Introductions by Victoria Newton Ford. The event will be held on March 22nd at 7pm in the Reading Room at Petworth Citizen, next to Upshur Street Books. Enter through the Petworth Citizen main entrance; the Reading Room is to the right off the back.

Open to the public. All welcome.

Victoria Newton Ford is a black queer poet from the South, currently living in DC. She has been writing for more than 10 years, and her interests are centered around the black feminist practices of survival, healing, family, spirituality, and history. She is the co-winner of the 2016 Deacon Maccubbin Young Writer Award in Poetry.

Taylor Johnson is proud of being from Washington, DC. They’ve received fellowships and scholarships from Callaloo, Cave Canem, Lambda Literary foundation, VONA, the Fine Arts Work Center, and the Vermont Studio Center. Their work appears in, or is forthcoming from, CALLALOO, the minnesota review, Vinyl Poetry, Hayden’s Ferry Review, and elsewhere.

Raised in and around the Washington, DC area, Danielle Reed aka the Girl Genius has honed her skills in the DMV, Baltimore and Atlanta poetry scenes. She’s worked, shared stages, featured and competed with some of the best poets in the country. In 2012 after a short hiatus to complete a Master’s degree at Georgetown, she jumped head first back into the scene as a slam poet—competing in almost 75 slams during the 2012-13 season. In the 2015 and 2016 seasons she was a finalist for Baltimore’s national slam team.

Peacejah has been living in her Godly blessing for the last 5 Years.  She loves her church UFCDC and most definitely her community. Life has been a struggle however God showed her favor by Blessing her with this priceless gift. She always remembers that lessons are truly blessings.
