As a third-generation Washingtonian, Thomas “Tom” Daniel has seen a lot of changes in D.C. – including the city’s skyline. “When I was born, we lived behind the Hawk and Dove restaurant on C Street in Southeast. The area looks completely different from when I was growing up,” says Daniel, an attorney, a roofer and owner of R. Thomas Daniel Roofing Company. “But with all of the changes in the District one thing has remained the same since my great grandfather lived and worked here as a roofer - the beauty of the historic homes, churches and buildings on Capitol Hill, Georgetown and throughout the City.” Tom’s great grandfather started the family roofing business on Capitol Hill in the 1920’s. Tom’s father, Robert Daniel, bought the company from Tom’s great grandfather in the 1950’s. As a young teen, at about 13, Tom started helping his father with the business. Tom graduated from Gonzaga High School and went on to college and law school but each summer during high school and college Tom continued working in the family business. Tom even negotiated with George Mason University School of Law to exchange his roofing expertise for some of his law school tuition. After law school, Tom began a career in financial services though he still worked some roofing jobs on the weekends. As his success in financial services grew, Tom found himself being pulled away from Washington, D.C. and the family business. For a time, Tom was a senior executive and consulted with large multi-national corporations around the U.S. and the Asia Pacific region. Since his return to the D.C. area, he has successfully built the roofing business into a thriving, customer-focused company specializing in metal roofs, such as copper, slate turret roofs and membrane roofs of all types for flat and low-slope roofs.
