Job Opportunities at the DC Center for the LGBT Community

The DC Center is looking for a motivated, energetic individual to coordinate its Center Latinx program, which centers queer, trans, non-binary, Black, brown, Indigenous, Two-Spirit, and disabled Latinxs in the DMV (DC, Maryland, Virginia) area.

This is a part-time, staff position that will require approximately 15 hours of work per week between October 2018 and September 2019.

The employee will be in charge of:

  • Managing the Center Latinx program, including all of its events, community partner relationships, social media pages, bilingual monthly newsletters, blogs, and more
  • Administering the Mayor’s Office on Latino Affairs grant that funds Center Latinx, including drafting all quarterly and final reports, and tracking the budget and workplan,
  • Organizing bi-monthly meetings of the Latinx LGBTQIA+ Coalition, a loose collective of trans and queer Latinx individuals and organizations in the DMV area
  • Organizing a job readiness training to expand DC’s Latinx LGBTQIA+ community’s workforce development
  • Planning town halls, community dialogues, and workshops on issues that impact Latinx LGBTQIA+ communities,
  • Hosting arts and cultural events that uplift Latinx hxstories and diverse communities
  • Building relationships and uplift members of the local community, and seek ways to collaborate to transform the lives of Latinx LGBTQIA+ people in DC
  • Working with DC Center staff as needed, and uphold the mission and values of the organization
  • Educating themselves on the many DC Center programs and other local resources, including housing and other emergency assistance, and staff the support desk as needed

The ideal candidate will:

  • Have a personal and deep understanding of issues that impact Latinx LGBTQIA+ communities in DC and beyond,
  • Be proficient at speaking Spanish in a professional and community setting,
  • Have experience with event organizing and planning,
  • Know how to use grassroots organizing methods and social media to reach community members, and
  • Be highly self-motivated and able to work flexible hours, including some nights and weekends.

Job Position Description: Staff Social Worker/Therapist (LGSW or LICSW)

Staff Social Worker/Therapist Position:

The DC Center for the LGBT Community has a mission of educating, empowering, celebrating, and connecting the lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender community of Washington, DC. The Staff Social Worker/Therapist helps to achieve this mission by providing mental health support services to survivors of violence, crime, and trauma. These services are available free-of-charge to our community members due to grant funding from the Office of Victim Services and Justice Grants (OVSJG). The Staff Social Worker/Therapist will see clients individually, with a chance to also work with clients in group settings. The person who fills this position is also responsible for other related projects, such as supporting the social work team in quarterly reporting and management of the OVSJG grant and occasional outreach and education opportunities in the LGBTQ community. They will report to the Executive Director. Please note that this position does not provide on-site clinical supervision hours, so should candidate want to pursue clinical supervision, they must do so off-site.

Special Skills:

The Staff Social Worker/Therapist must have the appropriate licensure to practice in DC (LGSW or LICSW) and have at least 2 years’ experience working as a clinician with a diverse client population. They must also have a demonstrated ability to work with LGBTQ+ adults, to work well in a team, to problem solve and communicate at all levels verbally as well as in writing. Must be self-motivated and be able to build and maintain relationships, both with colleagues and community members, as well as be well adept at working in a fast pace environment. Bilingual capabilities are strongly preferred, but not required.

Functions and Duties

Staff Social Worker/Therapist: Responsibilities:

  • Provide individual and couples mental health support services, both through counseling and case management to a caseload of 10-15 unique clients, with potential for group work
  • Conduct intake assessments with all new potential clients to assess safety, job status, financial resources, living arrangements, current support system, type and history of victimization, legal issues, related medical history, and clinical symptomatology for the past 30 days.
  • Provide clients with LGBTQ-friendly and affirming referrals to community-based services, aimed at assisting individuals affected by crime, violence and trauma
  • Assess clients and provide necessary intervention in crisis situations (safety plans, hospitalization, referrals, etc.)
  • Keep current and accurate records of all clinical interactions in MyClientsPlus, a clinical database system
  • Support social work team in writing of quarterly reports and managing grant deliverables for the OVSJG grant throughout the fiscal year
  • Deliver trauma-informed, culturally competent assessment and treatment techniques to all survivors seeking support services, and serve as a resource for all individuals seeking support through The DC Center
  • Work in partnership with The DC Anti-Violence Project members to further the mission, vision, and values of DC AVP
  • Facilitate, as needed, cultural competency training opportunities, community presentations, and outreach events
  • Work well with a diverse staff to facilitate an open, supportive and warm environment for all individuals who visit The DC Center

This posting is for a part-time Office Administrator position at the DC Center for the LGBT Community.   This position is approximately 30 hours per week. The Office Administrator will perform administrative and office support activities for multiple colleagues, and Center visitors. Duties may include fielding telephone calls, receiving and directing visitors, volunteer management, word processing, creating spreadsheets and filing. The Office Administrator will also work with our bookkeeper to cut checks twice a month, and do finance related data entry.

The Office Administrator will also make updates to the DC Center website, and disseminate information through our social media sites, including Facebook and Twitter.

The ideal candidate will have experience working with LGBTQ people and people living with HIV/AIDS, as well as the all the diverse communities in the District of Columbia.

We seek an individual who is excited at the prospect of working at a small, but growing non-profit organization and is passionate about supporting our local lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender community. GLAD’s Legal Assistants provide key support for GLAD’s six attorneys in advancing the mission
and goals of the organization. The Legal Assistant performs legal and social science research, drafts
research memoranda, prepares court documents and correspondence, and proofreads and checks
citations for complex legal documents. In addition, the Legal Assistant performs regular
administrative tasks such as coordinating meetings and travel, filing and maintaining records,

Metro DC PFLAG seeks a part-time staff person to manage the day-to-day functions of the

organization’s office operations and provide support to Metro DC PFLAG community

groups throughout the region.

Supervision: The incumbent will report directly to the Metro DC PFLAG Board of Directors.

Specific Responsibilities:

Administrative Support

● Act as office manager by supporting logistical operations and managing technology, supplies,

telecommunications, and other tools and services that support volunteers, board members and

donors.

● Track and follow-up with volunteers, Speaker’s Bureau presenters, and support group requests

for information and supply requests; log, file, and maintain updated databases for volunteers,

donors, and community groups; and perform mail merge tasks.

● Collect and maintain organizational statistics and prepare monthly reports.

● Coordinate with the Board President, Co President and Treasurer in processing and paying the

monthly bills.

● Responsible for submitting agenda, reports (financial and other) and meeting notices to the

Board in a timely manner and attending monthly board meetings.

● Purchase office supplies as directed and within budget guidelines.

● Recruit and supervise interns and volunteers who assist in the office.

● Compile and produce the Annual Membership Report and National PFLAG annual chapter

renewal.

Financial

● Manage donation processing.

● Maintain copies of documentation necessary for outside accounting firm and tax forms.

● Produce responses to time sensitive requests within a 24-hour time period.

● Conduct banking for the organization as needed, usually once a week, including online PayPal

deposits.

Development

● Manage gift acknowledgements, pledge reminders and processing within one week of notice.

● Generate monthly development and accounting reports in coordination with Board Fundraising

Chair and Treasurer.

● Support Board Fundraising Chair with grant proposal writing and submission, bi-annual mail

appeals, online campaigns, and others opportunities

● Recruit, coordinate and manage special event volunteers with assistance from the Board.

● Follow up on events and maintain current records for events.

● Send thank you letters to donors and maintain communication with engagement opportunities.

Marketing / Communications

● Assist in oversight of website and electronic communications..

● Update/maintain and create Constant Contact emails, group lists, Facebook page, Twitter,

Instagram and blog accounts.

● Print brochures as needed for events, coordinate updates, and reprint brochures and flyers.

● Provides Community Support Group leaders with needed resources including volunteer binders.

● Assist with special projects assigned by members of the Board.

● Coordinate and post mailed correspondence.

● Ensure all communication systems are streamlined and up to date.

● Create and update new resources for community outreach using Adobe Creative Cloud

software.

Programming/Community Engagement

● Create opportunities for volunteers and Board of Directors to engage in check-ins, trainings,

● Coordinate Pride tabling events at Capital Pride, Capital Trans Pride, Youth Pride, Black Pride,

Latino Pride, Northern VA Pride, and local High School Pride events..

● Attend LGBT events at local nonprofits, businesses, schools, and government agencies. Engage

them in providing Metro DC PFLAG resources and trainings.

● Establish relationships with volunteers to create and maintain successful community groups, and

support their programming for events and meetings.

● Visit community groups in order to better understand their needs and provide necessary

support.

Position Summary

The Program Officer will support ongoing activities and projects of the Dignity for All: LGBTI Assistance Program which provides emergency financial assistance to human rights defenders (HRDs) and civil society organizations (CSOs) under threat around the world, with a focus on lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and intersex (LGBTI) human rights. The Program Officer reports to the Program Manager for Dignity for All.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in political science, international relations, human rights, law, or related field, Master’s degree preferred
  • Minimum 3-4 years of experience in program management, including reporting ability and knowledge of funder account requirements
  • Must have experience working on human rights and LGBTI rights globally
  • Strong ability to communicate effectively in English, both verbally and in writing
  • Ability to communicate effectively in a second language preferred
  • Demonstrated experience in creating, managing and effectively reporting on budgets and program activities
  • Demonstrated ability to accurately track expenditures and maintain up-to-date financial tracking systems and all supporting documentation
