As new leadership in America continues to demonize immigrants and drastically restrict the flow of ref ugees and asylum seekers into the U.S.\, UNSETTLED humanizes a group few p eople know who are desperately trying to create new and safer homes.\n\n\n  \n\n\nSubhi\, a gay Syrian refugee\, who\, having survived multiple deat h threats from Islamic terrorists\, beatings by a homophobic father\, and a nation devastated by war\, finds his voice as a leader for refugee right s in the U.S. Cheyenne and Mari\, a lesbian couple from Angola\, who\, hav ing faced brutal harassment from family and neighbors\, seek uncertain asy lum through the American immigration courts while pursuing their dreams of becoming musicians. Junior\, a gender non-conforming gay man from the Con go\, struggles to find even basic housing and livelihood while exploring a more fluid gender identity.\n\n\n \n\n\nUNSETTLED takes place largely in the San Francisco Bay Area\, historically a beacon for dislocated LGBT pe ople in the U.S. While cultural narratives of a “queer promised land” still persist\, the film asks whether Northern California is even practica l as a place to resettle LGBT refugees\, especially given the enormous gen trification\, increased costs of living\, and scarcity of housing in recen t years—a set of problems present in many American cities. What are the costs persecuted immigrants pay for seeking refuge in America? And how are everyday Americans stepping forward to help those most in need?\n\n\n \n \n\n\n[embed]https://vimeo.com/342622800[/embed]\n\n\nTo Volunteer For Thi s Event email Kimberley@TheDCCenter.org\nThank You To Our Media Sponsor\n\ nThank you to our community partners\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n ATTACH;FMTTYPE=image/jpeg:https://thedccenter.org/wp-content/uploads/2020/ 02/unsettled.jpg CATEGORIES:Black,Center Arts,Global,HIV/AIDS,Men,People of Color,Reel Affirmations,Women LOCATION:Landmark E Street Cinema\, 555 11th Street NW\, Washington\, DC \, 20004\, United States X-APPLE-STRUCTURED-LOCATION;VALUE=URI;X-ADDRESS=555 11th Street NW\, Washin gton\, DC \, 20004\, United States;X-APPLE-RADIUS=100;X-TITLE=Landmark E S treet Cinema:geo:0,0 END:VEVENT BEGIN:VTIMEZONE TZID:America/New_York X-LIC-LOCATION:America/New_York BEGIN:STANDARD DTSTART:20191103T010000 TZOFFSETFROM:-0400 TZOFFSETTO:-0500 TZNAME:EST END:STANDARD END:VTIMEZONE END:VCALENDAR
