Yay!!!!! We are going to have a ball!!!
I wonder whether there is any possibility of arranging for Paul Elliot Russell to speak at the festival. He is a professor at Vassar College and the author of several novels that I have recently read: “Immaculate Blue”, “Boys of Life” and “Salt Point” (which is on my reading list), among others. I am currently reading “The Unreal Life of Sergey Nabakov”. I finf his work to be extremely compelling.
Thanks,
Hi Rick,
Thanks for the suggestion. We’ll be happy to reach out to Paul and see if he’d be interested in coming down.

Is there an age restriction for volunteering?
Volunteers must be age 14 or older, and all youth must be accompanied by an adult.
This article offers clear idea in favor of the new viewers of blogging, that truly how to do blogging.
Totally awesome. Congratulations.
Odd that the senior members in the picture were not identified. I know three of the older men and know they are not closeted. The man on the right is also a friend of the group.
Hello there. I live in NW DC and I am interested in the Latinx LGBTQI Coalition. How can I join?

I am a trans women who works in Baltimore city and I would love to get your help on how and what things I need to do to start my own trans group ?
Hi Rhonda,
Thank you for your comment and for reaching out to us. Have you contacted GAY & LESBIAN COMMUNITY CENTER OF BALTIMORE (GLCCB) in Baltimore? They are closer than the DC Center and might be able to better assist your effort.
Best,
Ping
where does one go for help with housing if they are 26?
Thanks,
Hey Lloyd,
It really depends on their situation, and there are a lot of variables to take into consideration. What state do they currently reside in and do they have a valid drivers license? Are they a Veteran, or on disability? Can they afford to rent a room and if so what is their budget? Do they qualify for Emergency Rental Assistance? So …… the best thing to do is to call the DC Center and have them talk to one our two amazing social workers and we can go from there!
can you produce the newsletters, etc
so the reader can toggle back and forth between the complete english version and the complete spanish version so that we can use it as a learning tool for the language that i am not completely familiar with….?
Hi tj,
Unfortunately, at this time we do not have the staff capacity to translate our newsletter into Spanish.
Thank you for reaching out to the DC Center for the LGBT Community!
It’s really nice to see Sam get recognized! I am lucky to work with Sam regularly through the DC Center’s Youth Working Group (www.thedccenter.org/youth). – Eddy Ameen, YWG chair

Thank you
Hi Maria,
The DC Center operates a program called Center Global. Since 2012, Center Global has served 200 LGBT individuals from Africa, Southeast Asia, Latin America and the Caribbean, the Middle East, and the former Soviet Union countries and Russia seeking asylum in the United States. A program of the DC Center for the LGBT Community, Center Global provides a welcoming environment to LGBT asylum seekers, and works to address individual legal and social needs. Where possible, Center Global can provide short-term financial assistance, legal referrals, general and mental health services referrals, and other social support referrals during the asylum process.
Thank you for your inquiry!
Love you proud of you…..for being who you are
Are candidates still being considered for this position?
Thank you.
Hi Michelle,
Thank you very much for your interest in the position. However, we have selected a candidate for this position.
Best,
Ping
Are candidates still being considered for this position?
Thank you.
Hello Michelle,
We (The DC Center) cannot say that they are still accepting applicants for this position. We posted the listing on the 10th of July. You can however email legalassistant@glad.org with possible questions.
Ni hao Ping,
Thank you for writing about inclusivity. Studies confirm anecdotal experience that gay men under thirty do not even care about let alone respect gay men over sixty. I have even been told by young gay men that I am not welcome in gay bars which is ironic given that I am a Stonewall veteran. The fact that the Center has a group for senior does not change this.
Article
“Yet Another Problem for Older Gay Men: “Internalized Gay Ageism” by J. Bryan Lowder
Fortunately, the researchers identified one factor that shows promise in at least partially softening the “social stress” of IGA: mattering. “Mattering,” according to the paper, “refers to the degree to which people feel they are an important part of the world around them.” It goes on: “People with a high sense of mattering feel that others think about them, seek their advice, or care about what happens to them.” A sense of mattering could come from a variety of sources, but one that immediately comes to mind is for young gay men to make a point of spending time and developing friendships with older gay men. There’s something of a taboo on this within the community—partially due to the (sometimes true) idea that older gay men are only after sex and partially because younger gay men can be incurious, historically ignorant babies—but it’s one we have to overcome. I have long encouraged cross-generational conversation as a way of transmitting and preserving our history—but now we know it’s also essential to the health of the guys who made it possible for us to be out in the first place.
To their credit, the paper authors recognize the injustice inherent in having our heroes think they don’t matter because they are no longer idealized young studs: “These men have traversed unparalleled, personally relevant historical changes across their adult lives and have paved the way for younger generations of sexual minorities to live in a time of less institutionalized discrimination,” they write in the conclusion. “Still, they are subject to feeling socially invisible and depreciated in their later years, especially within the gay male community.” This is shameful—the very place they should feel at home and cared for should not be a source of stress. We can and must do better.

I would like to have a appointment to meet up with Dr. Z. Clarke about a problem I am having with neighbors. I am a black male and I have a disability, in which they make fun of. My name is Mr. Gibbs. Give me a call at 301-808-4690 or email me, let me know when I can see you. Thank you
Hi Mr. Gibbs,
Thank you for your message. If you would like to make an individual appointment, please email us at supportdesk@thedcenter.org or call us at (202)682-2245.
I’ve gone to some “straight” polyamory groups and found no common connection to the dynamic I could imagine and have tried to navigate in a gay men’s poly-amorous relationship. I thought this group might be that. As I looked at attendance to some of the past events, I see this group might not be…or at least hasn’t yet tapped gay men considering or experiencing polyamory. Perhaps I can do something to help get that segment involved or even as a side group to begin. Let’s chat
HI Marc,
Thank you for reaching out to the DC Center for the LGBT Community. The next poly discussion group is tomorrow. Feel free to come and share your thoughts!
I’m a residential counselor to a gay male with intellectual disabilities.
I’m very interested in finding him a support group.
Hi Dana,
Thank you for reaching out to the DC Center for the LGBT Community! We host a discussion group meetup every second Saturday of the month at 1pm. The next one is this Saturday (1.13.18), please have your client come and share their thoughts!
Thank you!
is there an option to show up later? Say around 730-8 and still help out still?
Hi Amy,
Thank you for reaching out to the DC Center for the LGBT Community! Feel free to show up a little late. We do not turn away late comers.
I agree strongly with the need to for Congress to pass comprehensive immigration reform, to include providing a path to citizenship for Dreamers plus enhanced protections and services for LGBTQ persons fleeing violence and/or discrimination in their home countries.
This letter to Congress would have been stronger had it not included any mention of partisan politics, e.g., framing the President’s ending of DACA as an attack on immigrants. In fact, both of our major political parties have failed to enact immigration reform for two decades. The President’s termination of DACA puts this issue back into the hands of Congress where it belongs. The American people support providing Dreamers a path to citizenship and the need for comprehensive immigration reform. It is now our responsibility to ensure our Congressional representatives hear our voices and act accordingly. We vote, and we are watching.
I would most definitly be interested in volunterring for one day out of the week,,,for front desk duties,,,please respond to what day is in accordance to others whom may have applied to volunteer.
Sincerely
Ms Dee Curry .
Hi Ms. Dee Curry,
Thank you for reaching out to the DC Center for the LGBT Community! Are you available on Thursdays? Send me an e-mail chris@thedccenter.org
Thanks Dee!
Good morning Ms. Miller,
My name is Samantha Harper and I am apart of this great film “Shane’s Story”. This film is about a teenager who is at his wits end about his sexuality of being gay. He has thought about suicide until he meets someone who can bring some sort of balance into his life and he can open up about who is as a young man in a society (small town) that is not so willing to accept him or anyone else like him. I would like for you to take a look at the trailer as well as my FB page for my views as well as other cast members. Thank you for your time, patience and consideration.
Hi Samantha,
Thank you for reaching out to the DC Center for the LGBT Community and sharing your trailer!

Thank you! We look forward to seeing you!
I visited the DC center Friday, January 19 for a trans/gender queer game night. I showed my ID to the “female-presenting” guard. She returned my ID and said “Thank you, Ms Hill.” She’s referred to me in this manner other times I’ve visited the DC center and I’ve let it slide, but this particular evening I asked her “Why she continues to call me a “Ms” when clearly that’s not the gender I’m expressing!” She argued with me that “female” is what is on my ID and everyone is different and a bunch of other nonsense that I chose to ignore. I advised her to never refer to me as a a “Ms” again and I walked off. She continued mumbling and grumbling even after I had walked away. I didn’t realize I could report her behavior until now. She’s a nasty woman. I’ve always had issues with her. I haven’t been to the DC center since, but I plan on attending the trans support group this upcoming Friday and/or Tuesday. We’ll see what happens. Thank you.
Hi Jhey,
I’m so sorry that this happened to you! My name is Chris Rothermel. If this happens again, please get the officer’s name and let me know. My e-mail address is chris@thedccenter.org I hope this doesn’t keep you from coming to the meetings.
Thank you for reaching out to the DC Center for the LGBT Community!
My partner and I would love to be involved! Can we drop in tomorrow at 7pm to help? I didn’t see a sign up – apologies if I’ve overlooked it.
Please do! Thank you for reaching out to the DC Center for the LGBT Community!

Any help finding housing for handicapped seioors? 202 251 0970
Hi Donald,
Have you reached out to the DC Housing Authority? Although there is a waiting list for housing in the District of Columbia, preference is given to persons with mobility impairments, particularly those who serve as the head of a household. When there is a handicapped-accessible unit available, DCHA will go down its waiting list to look for applicants who have indicated they have mobility impairments.
I hope this is helpful!
I see that this post is a couple weeks old, have all volunteer posts been filled or is the Center still looking for people to help out? I would love to offer any time I can if there is still a need for it.
Sincerely,
Marin Kirk
Thank you for your interest in volunteering at the front desk! All of the spots have been filled, but I will save your information and reach out to you when the next slot is open.
