Lock up your vice president, because one of New York City’s most beloved comedy shows, Kweendom, is coming to Washington D.C.
Just in time for Pride, the queer comedy extravaganza features performances from Gabe Gonzalez (Hosting on Scruff), Calvin Cato (Oxygen), Veronica Garza (MTV), Jess Henderson (UCB) and Bobby Hankinson (Sirius XM). This is the debut tour for Kweendom as we spread our gay agenda all over the country starting in Washington D.C. (June 6), Baltimore (June 7) and Richmond (June 8). This cast of funny friends is sure to slay the stage (and light up Grindr grids) from coast to coast.
Hankinson created Kweendom after years writing a column for leading LGBTQ publication Towleroad.com, touring the country as a member of the Awkward Sex and the City storytelling troupe and a lifetime of banging dudes on the regular. Launched in 2015 at the onset of New York City’s queer comedy boom, Kweendom features only performers who identify as LGBTQ.
“I started this show as sort of a challenge to prove there are enough talented queer people to sustain a regular show without adding allies,” Hankinson said. “I love our allies, but I just think queer people make better art — don’t at me.”
Kweendom we will be donating 20 percent of proceeds to The DC Center whose mission is to educate, empower, celebrate, and connect the LGBT community. But besides contributing to the local queer community, they hope to spread our big, gay magic to audiences all over the Kinsey scale.
Kweendom at Black Cat, June 6, 7:30 p.m., $15
