As a professional photographer and graphic designer, capturing images has been a central focus of Todd’s life from high school to his studies at the Savannah College of Art and Design, and with Metro Weekly where we have seen his portraits on the cover for most of the last 23 years.
Throughout high school and college, he created stilllifes for his lens that captured how he felt inside, mostly melancholy pieces that expressed his coming out experiences. A college trip to France in the early ’90s introduced him to the joys and challenges of landscape photography.
Following college, he enjoyed work in catalog photography at Woodward and Lothrop and the Hecht Company.

It’s amazing how excited he would get when new challenging perfume bottles came onto the scene.
Todd had little to no interest in photographing people until David Tannous looked through his work and told him that his snaps of friends could be a portrait show.

He was shocked. Todd then took on a portrait project conceived

by his friend David de la Tour.

In 1995, Randy Shulman asked Todd to photograph Sir Ian McKellan for Metro Weekly, where he honed his portrait skills in some very challenging situations over the years. Meanwhile, he has always done personal work on the side.

Landscapes remain a focus of enjoyment and thanks to digital photography he developed his own quirky — and sometimes meditative — eye for “street photography.”
This show is a combination of Todd’s experiences, including memorable portraits from Metro Weekly, landscapes, street photography and some of his college work from a series called “Wear and Tear: Inspired by Irving Penn,” newly reborn and printed on aluminum.

On September 7th we sadly say goodbye to  PhotoArtist, Todd Franson
